Hands on Hips

My grandmother always taught me, while growing up, never to put my hands on my hips, at least when speaking to her or anyone for that matter.  If I did, she would say "take your hands off your hips."  Up to this day I cannot understand why, maybe it shows belligerence.

I only just noticed today how all these famous young women pose with their hand(s) on their hip(s).  I not quite sure what that pose says to their audience/voyeurs. Or maybe they just didn't know what to do with their hands. How about clasped behind the back or confidently down to the sides?

Now, I wonder if any of my photographs has me with my hand(s) on my hip(s).

one actress (zoe salanda?) said that hands behind your back make you/her look armless... it's also a submissive stance, IMO.
Actresses are told to stand with their hands on their hips, probably for the fall of the dress.
